Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday inaugurated two newly named stands at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, paying tribute to Indian cricket legends Yuvraj Singh and Harmanpreet Kaur. The historic ceremony was held ahead of the second T20 International match between India and South Africa, adding to the celebratory atmosphere at the venue.
The initiative marks a significant honour for two of Punjab’s most celebrated cricketers. Yuvraj Singh, remembered as the Player of the Tournament in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, has long been regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in Indian cricket history. Harmanpreet Kaur, who recently led the Indian women’s team to a historic Women’s ODI World Cup title, has emerged as a symbol of leadership and resilience in women’s cricket.
During the event, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also felicitated members of Punjab’s women’s cricket contingent who were part of the World Cup-winning squad. Cash awards were presented to Harmanpreet Kaur, Harleen Deol, Amanjot Kaur, and fielding coach Munish Bali, recognising their outstanding performances and contributions to Indian cricket.
Speaking at the ceremony, state officials highlighted Punjab’s rich cricketing legacy and reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting sports and nurturing young talent. The naming of the stands is expected to inspire aspiring cricketers across the state and serve as a lasting reminder of the achievements of Punjab’s sporting icons.
The event not only celebrated past and present cricketing excellence but also reinforced Punjab’s vision of honouring sporting heroes who have brought pride to the nation on the global stage.
