A violent clash erupted at Ludhiana Central Jail on Tajpur Road on Tuesday evening, leaving Jail Superintendent Kulwant Sidhu seriously injured. According to reports, over 200 inmates attacked jail staff and CRPF personnel with bricks and stones, prompting an immediate and large-scale deployment of security forces under the supervision of Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma.
The riot reportedly began as tensions flared between two groups of prisoners, escalating quickly into chaos. Superintendent Kulwant Sidhu sustained injuries during the melee and was rushed to a private hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities acted swiftly to regain control of the prison, employing additional security personnel to prevent further escalation.
Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has called for a detailed report on the incident to investigate the security lapse that allowed such large-scale violence to occur. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic inside the jail, with prisoners running amok and emergency sirens blaring as officers struggled to restore order.
The incident has raised serious concerns about inmate management, prison security, and staff safety in Punjab’s correctional facilities. Following the clash, officials have begun an internal inquiry to identify the causes and hold responsible parties accountable. The Ludhiana Central Jail riot has sparked widespread attention online, with citizens and media urging stricter monitoring and preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
Authorities continue to maintain tight security at the facility while assessing damages and reviewing protocols to ensure the safety of both staff and inmates.
