India is gearing up for a major transformation in mobile security as leading telecom operators Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL have officially begun live trials of the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service across select circles. The initiative is supported by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and is designed to display the KYC-verified name of callers directly on mobile screens, offering a safer and more transparent calling experience for millions of users.
The CNAP system works differently from third-party caller ID apps like Truecaller. Instead of relying on crowdsourced data, it fetches the caller’s authenticated name from telecom KYC records, significantly reducing the chances of identity spoofing, spam, and impersonation-based financial fraud. This move comes at a crucial time when India has witnessed a surge in online fraud, digital arrest scams, OTP frauds and spam marketing calls.
According to telecom industry rollout plans, CNAP is expected to be implemented nationwide by March 31, 2026, once the testing phase is completed and performance results are evaluated. Experts believe that once fully deployed, CNAP could become a game changer for consumer safety, trust, and cybersecurity in India’s telecom ecosystem.
With CNAP trials currently underway, users may soon experience a more secure and transparent calling experience, reducing uncertainty and strengthening digital confidence.
