Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the opposition faced by a peaceful Nagar Kirtan procession in New Zealand, expressing serious concern over attempts to disrupt Sikh religious activities abroad. Dhami said such incidents pose a direct threat to social harmony, multicultural values, and the fundamental right to religious freedom in democratic societies.
Calling the disruption “highly condemnable,” he urged both the New Zealand government and Indian authorities to ensure the safety, dignity, and religious rights of the Sikh community living overseas. He emphasised that Sikh traditions are deeply rooted in peace, equality, and the welfare of all humanity, and any attempt to obstruct religious gatherings reflects intolerance and growing hostility towards minority communities.
The SGPC President further appealed to international organisations and human rights bodies to take cognisance of the issue and ensure global support for Sikh religious freedom. The statement has sparked widespread discussion about diaspora safety, cultural respect, and the need to uphold harmonious multicultural environments worldwide.
