Indian Railways rolls out free wi-fi at 6,117 stations, big boost to digital india and passenger convenience

Indian Railways has reached a major milestone in its digital transformation journey by successfully providing free wi-fi services at 6,117 railway stations across India. This ambitious initiative is aimed at improving passenger experience and strengthening the government’s Digital India mission by ensuring easy and affordable internet access for millions of daily commuters.
The free wi-fi facility is now available at stations ranging from major metro hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata to small towns and remote rural stations. With this rollout, railway platforms are gradually turning into digital zones where passengers can stay connected while waiting for their trains. Travellers can access news updates, entertainment content, online booking services, digital payments and important travel information without using mobile data.
The project has been implemented with the support of RailTel, the public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways. RailTel has played a key role in setting up high-speed and reliable internet infrastructure across the vast railway network. Officials say the initiative not only improves convenience for passengers but also helps bridge the digital divide between urban and rural India.
Free wi-fi at railway stations is expected to benefit students, job seekers, small business owners and daily wage workers who rely on affordable internet access. It also supports initiatives like cashless transactions, online services and digital literacy, especially in underserved regions. Indian Railways plans to further enhance the quality and speed of connectivity in the coming months to meet growing user demand.
This nationwide wi-fi rollout reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to modernisation and technology-driven services, making train travel smarter, more connected and passenger-friendly than ever before.
