Congress Suspends Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu After ‘₹500 Crore CM Suitcase’ Remark Sparks Political Storm

The Punjab Congress on Monday suspended Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu from the party’s primary membership after her explosive remark alleging that the Chief Minister’s post in the party could be “bought” with a ₹500 crore suitcase. The decision, taken by Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, came amid a growing political uproar that erupted soon after her statement went viral and triggered accusations of rampant corruption within the party.
The controversy began when Dr. Sidhu, a former MLA and wife of senior Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, met the Punjab Governor and later spoke to the media. When asked whether her husband planned to return to active politics, she made a sensational comment suggesting that only those who could pay ₹500 crore could become Chief Minister. She said that while she and her husband always “speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat”, they do not possess the kind of money allegedly required to sit in the CM’s chair.
Her remark instantly sparked outrage. Opposition parties—including the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party—accused the Congress of promoting “money bag politics” and claimed her statement was proof of deep-rooted corruption within the organisation. Despite Dr. Sidhu later clarifying that her words were being “twisted” and that she only meant they could not afford to buy power, the political damage was already done.
