From Sepoy to Lieutenant: Gurmukh Singh’s 7th Attempt Success Story at IMA Dehradun Inspires the Nation

Perseverance, discipline, and an unbreakable spirit defined the journey of Lieutenant Gurmukh Singh, whose inspiring rise from a Sepoy to a commissioned officer has captured national attention following the Indian Military Academy (IMA) Passing Out Parade on December 13, 2025.

Among the 525 Gentlemen Cadets who proudly marched out of the historic Chetwode Hall, Lt. Gurmukh Singh stood out for his extraordinary struggle and determination. At the age of 32, he achieved his long-cherished dream of becoming an officer after facing six consecutive failures in various officer entry examinations. Success finally came on his seventh attempt, proving that persistence truly pays off.

Gurmukh Singh began his career in the Indian Army as a Sepoy and served in some of the most challenging conditions, including the high-altitude regions of Ladakh. Despite the physical and mental demands of active duty, he remained focused on self-improvement and higher education. During his service, he completed his post-graduation (MA) and later earned a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree, balancing studies with military responsibilities.

His journey was also deeply rooted in family legacy. Lt. Gurmukh Singh is the son of Retired Subedar Major Jaswant Singh, a respected Army veteran. Watching his son don the officer’s rank was an emotional moment for the family, symbolising the continuation of a proud tradition of service to the nation.

After multiple unsuccessful attempts through entries such as Army Cadet College (ACC) and Special Commissioned Officer (SCO), Gurmukh Singh refused to give up. His eventual selection and training at IMA culminated in his commissioning into the Army Air Defence (AAD) Corps, a crucial arm responsible for protecting Indian airspace from aerial threats.
